The Note: 19/5/19 - 26/5/19

Welcome to The Note, your weekly music news catch up!

This weeks industry news:

Lewis Capaldi's LP becomes fastest selling of 2019

Joining Post Malone atop the pantheon of 'Famous musicians who look like they smell of urine," perpetually sad sounding Glaswegian Lewis Capaldi's newest LP 'Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent' has sold 89,506 records in its first week according to the BBC. Known for a hilarious online persona (fair. He's a genuine interesting follow on his platforms) and for making every song he sings sound exactly the same (also true, but fair play to himself for making a fortune off it), the scotsman will be performing in Ireland this December.

Ed Sheeran announces surprise new album

The globe's most (only?) successful ginger announces his return to the musical world. Fresh off a well deserved break following the release of his ground-breakingly varied (sarcasm) multi-million pound earning (not sarcasm) album '÷' Sheeran has announced an entirely collaborative return to come out this summer. Maybe an i section of fresh blood into his songs, with announced features numbering Justin Bieber and Chance The Rapper, will signal a return from mainstream pop to the fluid, exciting style that broke him in the first place.

Spoiler: Both of the first two songs suck

Snapchat eneter music sphere

Social media giant Snapchar looks set too challenge TikTok for musical superiority amongst their respective fan bases. The camera oriented company is reportedly in talk with Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and Sony Music Group in a bid to obtain licenses for the musical acts associated with these labels. This would give them a vast well from which to pull legally sourced music from, and set the app up as a serious contender to TikTok's crown.

The Rolling Stones and Richard Ashcroft settle legal dispute

One of music's most dubious law suits has been settled, over twenty years since it was initially begun. Ashcroft, the writer of super hit 'Bittersweet Symphony' (The Verve) was accused of biting from a Rolling Stones musical arrangement for the tune's iconic string section. As much as I dislike the moaning bastard, seeing Ashcroft forced to hand over 100% of the songwriting royalties generated by the song (yes you read that correctly) has always sat wrong with me. It was bullshit from the start, and effectively everyone knew it (Jagger and Richards didn't even have a hand in the strings. None at all), so its good to see a little normalcy.
